고정관념

Although we hesitate to admit it, we all stereotype.

 

Stereotyping is a natural and universal information-processing strategy.

 

Taylor and Porter maintain that stereotyping should be seen as a normal and essentially benign process that is a useful information-processing tool in diverse societies.

 

The difficulty arises when stereotypes carry a negative connotation and are used to overgeneralize negative traits to an entire group of people when, in reality, few members of the group actually possess such traits.

 

Victoria Esses and Mark Zanna found that simply being in a "bad mood" may incline people to negatively stereotype.

 

Several studies have demonstrated that when individuals are in a negative mood, they are especially likely to attribute stereotypes that they consider to be very unfavorable to ceratin ethnic groups. In this way, stereotyping can lead to ethnocentrism.

우리가 인정하기는 싫지만, 우리는 모두는 고정관념을 가지고 있다.

고정관념을 가지는 것은 자연스럽고 또 정보-처리의 일반적인 전략의 하나이다.

 

테이러와 포터는 고정관념을 가지는것을 정상적으로 보아야 하고 본질적으로 도움이 되는

처리방식으로 다양한 사회에서 유용한 정보-처리의 도구가 될수 있다고 본다.

 

고정관념이 나쁜 방식(뜻)으로 작용되는 경우는 - 실제로는 어떤 그룹중 몇 구성원만 실제로 그런 (나쁜)  

특성을 보이지만, 그 나쁜 특성을 전체 그룹에게 과대하게 일반화 하는 경우 - 에 문제가 된다.

 

빅토리아 에쎄와 마크 짜나는 단지 "나쁜 기분"이 사람들로 하여금 부정적 고정관념으로 기울게

하는 것을 발견하였다. 

 

몇 몇의 연구는 개인들이 나쁜 기분상태 일때, 그것(나쁜 기분)이-  어떤 특정 인종 그룹에 크게

불리하게 적용될 수 있는 - 고정관념(편견)의 탓이라 생각하는 경향이 두드러짐을 보여 주었다.

이러한 방식으로, 고정관념은 (자기) 민족중심주의로 이끌수 있다.
